  • Prof Dame Anne Johnson

    Prof Dame Anne Johnson

    Anne Johnson (DBE, MD, FMedSci, FRCP, FFPH, FRCGP) is Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Chair of the Population and Lifelong Health Domain and Vice Dean for External and International Relations in the Faculty of Population Health Sciences at UCL. She was formerly Head of Department of Primary Care and Population Sciences and then Director of the Division of Population Health from 2002 – 2010.

    Her current research portfolio includes epidemiology/prevention of HIV and sexually transmitted infections/other infectious diseases, international HIV cohort studies, behavioural intervention studies and a community study of the epidemiological and immunological determinants of seasonal influenza transmission. She co-directed the MRC Centre for Coordinating Epidemiological Studies of HIV/AIDS from 1985-1999 and was PI on the National Surveys of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles in 1990, 2000 and 2010.

    Until 2010 she was Chair of the MRC Population Health Sciences Group/member of the MRC Strategy Board. Currently, she is a member of DEFRA Adaptation Sub-committee on Climate Change and member of the Board of Governors of the Wellcome Trust.

    Prof Ibrahim Abubakar

    Ibrahim Abubakar (MBBS, DPH, MSc, PhD, FFPH, FRCPE, FRCP) is Director of the UCL Institute for Global Health. From 2012 to 2016, he led the UCL Centre for Infectious Disease Epidemiology and the UCL-TB Centre as well as being a senior investigator at the MRC Clinical Trials Unit. In addition, he was the head of TB at Public Health England. Prior to his appointment at UCL, he was Professor in Health Protection at the Norwich Medical School.

    He runs a programme of research which focuses on the epidemiology, prevention, treatment and control of infections including tuberculosis, hepatitides, HIV, and other common problems such as antimicrobial resistance and vaccine preventable diseases particularly among vulnerable populations. He has published over 200 peer reviewed publications, several book chapters and an infectious disease epidemiology book. He is the chief investigator of several major infectious disease studies.

    He is chair of the main WHO TB advisory group (STAG TB) and serves on/chairs several expert/advisory groups for the WHO, and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and is a member of MRC and National Institute for Health research funding panels.

  • The WHO joined GACD as an observer to facilitate Alliance support for implementation of the World Health Assembly-approved Action Plan for the Global Strategy for Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases.
