Future GACD funding call topic: 2027

In October 2023, the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD) brought together a group of international experts to guide us in selecting future topics for funding calls, focussed on implementation science around strategies to tackle the increasing global burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Members had expertise in NCDs, implementation science, working with underserved communities in lower- and middle-income countries and policymaking. The group met over two days in London, and discussed wide ranging topics relevant to NCDs, from the growing field of artificial intelligence in health, to the impact of gender on health.

The group developed a report, scoping out a series of three future call topics, in line with the current GACD strategy to take a holistic, rather than disease focussed approach, to tackle NCDs in low- and middle- income countries and among underserved populations experiencing health disparities, such as Indigenous Populations, in high-income countries.

The topic recommended for 2027 is as follows:

2027

A call focussed on implementation research on interventions targeting children and young people to tackle the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) and underserved populations in high-income countries (HICs).

The remit of this call will cover implementation strategies around prevention, screening and management of NCDS, centred on the critical life stages, from early childhood to young adulthood (age 1-24).

The GACD is committed to supporting research undertaken through genuine partnership among high and low/middle-income country academics, policymakers, local authorities, and community groups. Where possible, research questions should be driven by local stakeholders and other intended beneficiaries of the research project.

While all GACD member funding agencies have agreed to the general scope and topic of the three calls, individual agencies will decide on a year-by-year basis if they will participate in a call cycle and may adjust certain specific requirements of the call to fit their own research strategy. While every effort will be made to move forward with the three call topics as described above, the GACD reserves the right to change one or more future call topics due to unforeseen circumstances.
