New Zealand
In Aotearoa New Zealand, lung cancer is a common cancer and cause of cancer deaths, especially for Māori. There are significant ethnic inequities in incidence and mortality and lung cancer is the largest contributor to the difference in life expectancy between Māori and non-Māori.
Background
Survival is poor (12% 5-year survival) largely due to late stage at diagnosis but early stage (stage 1A) lung cancer has a much higher (>70%) 5-year survival.
Earlier detection of asymptomatic lung cancer through screening using low dose computerized tomography (LDCT) scans can shift the stage at diagnosis and reduce mortality.
Identifying effective strategies to support Māori participation in lung cancer screening is imperative; if Māori participation is not at least equal to non-Māori participation, existing serious inequities will be increased.
Aims
To determine the effectiveness of two invitation strategies; primary care vs a central hub, via a cluster randomised trial
To describe key outcomes that are required to inform a potential national lung cancer screening programme in Aotearoa New Zealand, and
To evaluate contextual implementation factors in order to optimise a future local screening programme
Project plan
This research will provide important information regarding the most effective and acceptable invitation strategy for Māori who are eligible for lung cancer screening in Aotearoa New Zealand. It will also provide a range of secondary outcomes relevant to the implementation of lung cancer screening more widely in Aotearoa New Zealand.
