Comprehensive workplace intervention for cancer prevention in China

China

Project contact

Background

Cancer is among the leading causes of death in China and around the world. With new cases expected to increase by more than 60% by 2040, the health and economic costs will soar. Workplaces offer great but often untapped potential to support changing behaviour, lowering risk and reducing the burden of cancer with effective prevention strategies.

Aims

This project will adapt existing evidence-based strategies of workplace health promotion in the prevention and control of cancer and build a scalable model of cancer prevention in China. The effectiveness and acceptability of the model will be evaluated among workplaces in low and middle economic regions of China.

Project plan

This four-year research will take place in 15 workplaces in China, with mHealth technology used in both intervention and evaluation. Specifically healthy behaviour interventions will be implemented for at least one year through the following four key components: (1) health-related policies; (2) environmental support; (3) health-related programs; (4) employee health benefits.

  • The project will be evaluated primarily over the changes in modifiable behaviour risk factors of cancer by evaluating 1500 employees of the workplaces.

  • The project will provide strong evidence to help guide national policies and programs, leading to the advancement of China’s cancer prevention policies.

  • This workplace cancer prevention model has a great potential to be adapted by workplaces around the world to reduce the global cancer burden.
