Background
Drinking-related health problems are more frequent in Latin America compared to other regions in the world. One way to tackle this is through primary healthcare – doctors and nurses –, the entry point to health systems around the world.
Aims
SCALA (Scale-up of Prevention and Management of Alcohol Use Disorders in Latin America) is a multi-country study conducted in three middle-income Latin American countries (Colombia, Mexico and Peru), testing whether training PHC providers and providing municipal support (a range of adoption mechanisms and support systems) could support the improved implementation of PHC-based measurement, advice and treatment for heavy drinking and comorbid depression.
Project plan
To work with primary healthcare units in Colombia, Mexico and Peru, training local responders to identify alcohol use disorders and comorbid depression and dispense advice.
Publications and output
This project has a related case study Scaling up prevention and management of alcohol-use-disorders and co-morbid depression in Latin America.
