Assessing COPC scale-up in selected learning sites of the Cape Town Metro: community-based NCD prevention interventions (ACCELERATE)

South Africa

Background

In South Africa, there is a significant unmet need for care for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which already account for nearly 60% of all deaths. Community Orientated Primary Care (COPC) entails close liaison with community outreach teams consisting of community health workers (CHWs) employed by a local non-profit organisation (NPO) that could help to tackle the burden of NCDs on the local health system.

Aims

  • To plan, implement and evaluate a multilevel community-based intervention for NCD prevention and care in two primary care sites in the Cape Town Metro.

  • To assess barriers and facilitators for the scaling of selected NCD prevention and care interventions in the Cape Town Metro.

Project plan

Assessing COPC scale-up in selected learning sites of the Cape Town Metro: community-based NCD prevention interventions (ACCELERATE). A plan of action was developed based on the two pillars of Phase 1 of the ACCELERATE project (to identify appropriate community based NCD prevention interventions) including an implementation and integrated knowledge translation (IKT) strategy:

  • The implementation strategy envisaged conducting a situation analysis as well as a community needs assessment, followed by the establishment of community advisory groups in two COPC learning sites selected by the Cape Town Metro Health District Management Team;

  • Integrated knowledge translation consisted of a stakeholder mapping and evidence synthesis, including a critical appraisal of the literature related to community based NCD prevention interventions in LMICs, which were to be complemented by a series of expert interviews.
