GACD Annual Scientific Meeting, 12-14 November.

The delegation to the 2014 Annual Scientific Meeting totalled over 50 individuals, including representatives from eight GACD funding agencies. All research teams were represented with most sending two representatives but some sending as many as five. Prior to the meeting each team was asked to submit an abstract detailing the current status of the project.

The meeting itself was held over two and a half days with two days largely dedicated to presentations from each project, and a final half day local site visit. The meeting was divided into four sessions, with research teams assigned to sessions according to their project’s theme.

Early Career Implementation Science Workshop, 10-11 November 2014

The inaugural early career researcher implementation science workshop was held over one and a half days immediately prior to the Joint Technical Steering Committee (JTSC) annual meeting. The final delegation totalled 28, with 24 researchers working on GACD projects and four researchers nominated by CAMS. Participants generally had a background in either public health or clinical research, but there was a wide range in level of research expertise from project PIs to research technicians. The development of the agenda was led by Brian Oldenburg from University of Melbourne, Australia, with input from a number of other senior GACD researchers and guest speakers.

Feedback from participants was generally very positive with many seeing real worth from taking part; feeling that their appreciation of implementation science as a whole had grown and that they had better understanding of how it applied to their own research projects. Having a workshop occupying the first half of the JTSC week worked well, giving insight into many of the topics of discussion during the JTSC annual meeting. However if this were going to be a permanent fixture it was requested that specific topics within implementation science (suggested topics included process and economic evaluation, policymaker engagement, intervention scale-up, grant writing, and behaviour change) could be the focus.

About Annual Scientific Meetings

All funded projects under the GACD umbrella are expected to attend the Annual Scientific Meeting, normally represented by 2 (or more) team members. These meetings provide a valuable opportunity for Research Network members to share experiences and learn from each other, and initiate and continue cross-project activities. The meeting is the main event in the calendar of the GACD Research Network.
