GACD Debate at Parliament: NCDs Whose Problem is it?

November 05, 2012

Published in News

The GACD (Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases), the APPG-GH (All Party Parliamentary Group on Global Health), UCL’s Institute of Global Health and UCL Grand Challenges present a question time debate.

Background

Historically referred to as “Life Style” diseases most Non-Communicable Diseases are preventable. (Heart diseases and stroke, type 2 diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, some cancers and mental illnesses). NCDs account for 63% of all deaths and are the world’s number 1 Killer (WHO).

Where will the greatest burden of disease lie? 80% of global deaths occur in Low and middle-income countries and are a major cause of poverty. In the UK, some of the greatest effects of NCDs can be seen in diaspora or immigrant communities.

Yet, NCDs (Non Communicable Diseases) hold a very small place on the political global health agenda, in comparison with infectious diseases.

Lord Crisp (Chair of the APPG-GH) invites you to an open debate to assess the developing global health burden of chronic diseases:

  • Who should lead the debate?

  • What lessons can we learn from HIV?

  • How will NCDs effect our diaspora communities?

  • How can research alliances ease the global health burden?
