Our Associate Members have pledged over $30 million to date for new projects dedicated to the primary and secondary prevention of cancer.
The Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD) is pleased to announce that our Associate Members have pledged $34.8 million to date for new projects dedicated to the primary and secondary prevention of cancer in low- and middle- income countries (LMICs), or vulnerable populations in high- income countries (HICs).
Cancer is becoming one of the most important public health problems worldwide and a leading cause of premature death. Despite 30-50% of all cancers being preventable, it is predicted that 30 million people per year will die from cancer by 2030, disproportionately affecting people living in LMICs.
Implementation of effective, evidence-based interventions has been central to cancer control in many HICs. Yet, in LMICs and other low-resource environments, such interventions are under-used or have limited impact because of implementation challenges that have yet to be identified, researched, and addressed.
The projects funded by this joint call will use implementation research to explore the best strategies in the prevention and early detection of different types of cancer in LMICs and among underserved populations in HICs.
Dr Morven Roberts, CEO of GACD says, “We are very pleased to announce this joint support for cancer prevention research which adds to our worldwide portfolio of activities in non-communicable diseases. These are the leading causes of premature mortality around the world. Using the combined strength of our Alliance and targeting areas where evidence-based interventions are yet to be implemented, we can provide a knowledge base to help to overcome significant health disparities in cancer prevention and care.”
The GACD looks forward to announcing the details of these projects as part of the new Cancer programme in the coming months, as well as any further awards (please note that one GACD Member continues to accept applications).
The GACD is a collection of the world’s biggest public research funding agencies that work together to address the prevention and treatment of chronic non-communicable diseases on a global scale. Since our launch in 2009, our Associate Members have invested over $250 million in research projects in priority areas including hypertension, diabetes, lung diseases, mental health and cancer.
