GACD prepares for launch of 8th funding call focused on NCD prevention in cities

GACD provides additional information about its upcoming funding call and encourages teams to begin to create partnerships necessary for a successful application.

Call rationale

More than half of the world’s population currently live in cities and this number is projected to rise to 68% by 2050. Air, water, and soil pollution; lack of greenspace; urban heat islands; lack of safe infrastructure for walking, cycling, and active living; and wide availability of tobacco, alcohol, and unhealthy foods and beverages drive the non-communicable disease (NCD) epidemic in urban environments, informal settlements, and periurban communities (collectively referred to as ‘cities’). Recent climate related disasters, such as major flooding events, fires, and droughts, highlight how cities are at the forefront of the climate change crisis. There is an urgent need to equip local authorities and policymakers with strategies for maximising the health-promoting potential of cities, while minimising or reversing environmental degradation and health inequities.

Applicants to the current call are invited to conduct implementation research that leads to improved understanding of how specific interventions that reduce the risk of NCD onset or progression can be better adapted to different city environments and/or scaled within and across cities, taking into account unique local social, political, economic, and cultural contexts. Equity considerations are at the core of this call for proposals and all applications must consider the impacts of the implemented strategy(ies) on different population groups (i.e., to address gender discrimination, sexism, ageism, ableism, etc). Projects will occur in disadvantaged populations in low- and middle-income countries and/or in high income countries. Investigating strategies that can positively impact planetary health and/or climate change resilience and prevention will be encouraged, though not required. The GACD held a workshop in July 2022 exploring these themes and their relevance to implementation science and NCD prevention; learnings are captured here.

What researchers can do before the call launch

Researchers applying to this call will need to provide evidence of genuine partnership between HIC-LMIC researchers and/or non-Indigenous and Indigenous researchers, collaboration with key city decision makers such as urban planners and mayors, and engagement with the benefitting communities.

The GACD encourages potential applicants to explore potential partnerships as soon as possible. GACD resources, including our Find-a-Collaborator tool, can facilitate this. A full list of resources are available on the official call webpage.

To apply

The full call text and accompanying application forms will launch on 30 November 2022. GACD funding agencies will begin to announce their participation on this date, and will continue to join onto the call on a rolling basis until early 2023. Participation in earlier GACD funding calls is not a guarantee of participation in the current call. Most agencies will require a letter of intent for this call, which will be due in 2023 (exact date TBD).

Other funding calls

The National Institutes of Health continues to accept applications for the 6th (Primary and secondary prevention of cancer) and 7th (Life course approach to NCD risk factor prevention and reduction) GACD funding calls.

The topic of the 9th funding call has already been announced. This call will launch in November 2023 and will focus on the implementation of integrated health care strategies to manage multimorbidity.
