£15 million for the Medical Research Council Joint Global Health Trials Scheme

GACD member agency the Medical Research Council (MRC) together with the Wellcome Trust and the UK Department for International Development (DfID) are to spend up to £15 million on the fourth call for proposals under the Joint Global Health Trials partnership.

This amount is expected to fund several awards and is open to trials that test interventions for diseases or health conditions that affect people living in low- or middle-income countries (LMICs).This year, proposals for research into chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are particularly welcomed.

NCDs are an increasing global problem, with 80% of all deaths from NCDs occurring in LMICs, which amounts to nearly 29 million people each year.

In recognition of the escalating burden of NCDs in LMICs, DfiD, the MRC, and the Wellcome Trust have developed the scheme to fund trials that will have maximum impact within these regions. Proposals which address reproductive, maternal and newborn health are also welcomed.

The Global Health Trials Scheme primarily provides funding for late stage clinical and clinical and health intervention trials evaluating efficacy and effectiveness. The innovative scheme helps to fill a much needed gap in research funding and demonstrates the funding agencies’ continuing dedication to strengthening the evidence base for improving health in LMICs.

Proposals are currently being accepted by the MRC until 8 October 2013.
