GACD commitment to fund global diabetes research
On World Diabetes day, the GACD’s (Global Alliance for Chronic Disease) research and management teams have been meeting in the city of Xi’an, China.
In recognition of World Diabetes day, the funding agency members of the GACD have announced their joint commitment to fund a ground breaking global research programme into the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes, with a focus on implementation/intervention research in low-and middle-income countries, vulnerable populations in high-income countries and aboriginal communities within Canada.
All nine-member agencies have committed funds to the joint diabetes programme and results of successful applications will be released at the conclusion of peer review.
Dr Xuetao Cao, Chair, GACD, said, "This commitment from GACD funders of over USD 30 million using an implementation science approach to diabetes research will develop a global network of researchers that can enhance cumulative learning, working to reduce the impact of diabetes world wide."
According to the International Diabetes Federation, one in ten of the world’s population will have diabetes by 2035. People living with diabetes will surge from 382 million to 592 million people by 2035.
